Creating Lasting Summer Memories: A Family Session at Glencoe Beach

There’s something truly magical about Lake Michigan in the summer—especially when the golden light mixes with the clouds just right, the waves roll in ankle deep, and families come together to create lasting memories on the beach. One of my absolute favorite places to photograph during this season is Glencoe Beach, one Chicago’s North Shore treasures. It’s my go-to spot for beach sessions, and for good reason: it offers a mix of serene lake views, unique textures, and playful spaces for families to explore and enjoy.

This family is incredibly special! I’ve been lucky enough to capture this beautiful family since their daughter was a newborn, and over the years, we’ve had countless memorable sessions together. Watching their children grow, seeing their personalities shine through, and witnessing their bond strengthen each year is truly a rewarding part of my job. This session was another chapter in their story—and it was pure joy from beginning to end.

The family requested a beach setting, and Glencoe Beach delivered the perfect backdrop. One of the standout features of this location is the stone staircase that leads you down to the shore. It’s certainly a grand entrance to the best setting for a beach photography session in the Chicagoland area!

We began our session barefoot in the sand, walking from the pier all the way to the rock breaker wall.

Along the way, we stopped at several of my favorite vignettes—from lush greenery to dramatic rocks by the shoreline, and long stretches of soft sand.

What I love most about Glencoe Beach is how each turn offers a new scene, almost like a tropical escape tucked just minutes away from city life.

As the clouds rolled in and the sun began to dip, the sky turned into a painter’s canvas—soft pinks, muted purples, and golden yellows danced across the horizon. These slightly overcast evenings often give us the moody sunsets, adding a touch of drama and warmth to every frame. We made the most of this beautiful light, capturing a variety of family groupings, sibling portraits, couple moments, and individual shots along the way.

A highlight of the session was the kids’ enthusiasm for exploring. After a quick and spirited hunt for sea glass, we wrapped up our portraits at the pier, per the kids’ special request.

It was the perfect final stop—symbolic, fun, and full of energy.

But the most heartwarming moment? When the youngest member of the family asked if he could take a picture of his older brother. With a few simple instructions—turning the dials, adjusting the focus, and using the grid to frame a wide-angle shot—he captured a genuinely wonderful image. Watching him light up with pride was a reminder of how photography brings people together, no matter their age.

This session was more than just taking photos; it was about connection, laughter, and creating memories that this family will treasure for years to come.
